Dr. Amarelli is a nonacademic cardiac surgeon involved in heart transplantation during the last 20 years with solid scientific activity in transplantation, mechanical valve, and mechanical circulatory support.
He actively promotes heart donation for the European Cardiothoracic Transplant Association (ECTTA) as an ESOT ambassador. He stimulates the European Consensus Conference on thoracic donors, takes an active part on the ASAIO editorial board, and is now editor of the ASAIO, ESC Heart Failure, and Transplant International in the task force on New Technologies.
His career history demonstrates outstanding communication and leadership skills and a reputation for being organized and dependable. Further, his record of leadership in cardiac preservation in heart transplantation for scientific societies (ESOT) and the medical industry has resulted in measurable patient benefits. After the organization of the GRC and the TLJ, many initiatives are followed to rebuild organ donation with a unique look on DCD donation.
During the last few years, he has undertaken a national network looking to expand the adoption of mechanical circulatory support in Italy under the auspices of the National Transplant Center. He has been involved actively in the European networking of transplant professionals for ESOT and other scientific societies. He is now vice chair of the ECTTA section of the ESOT and an active reviewer for many journals and international meetings.
